Day 50 of 90 - Yoga  [8/30/2010 12:26 PM]
A week of recovery begins today.  How you can begin "recovery" with Yoga is beyond me, though I will say I did enjoy it a little more than usual today.  I actually came close to enjoying small bits and pieces of it, especially considering I was still mighty sore from Saturday's leg routine.  I guess I can't gripe and complain so much anymore, though an hour and a half is still a surprisingly long time.

 

So I was realizing that the next "building" part of the whole program is four weeks and then one more week of "recovery" and that'll be it.  That seems a might crazy.  It makes the end seem much more imminent.  I guess it's also helpful to think that I have less days then I've been through.  Anyway, all said and done, I'm feeling really good about it right now even though at times it does still feel like P90X is all I'm ever doing.  Somehow, life doesn't seem to have suffered too much, though that's in large measure thanks to Heather's awesome support. 

 

Now the trick is to find out how else I can better myself/the world for an hour and a half a day now that I know I can apply discipline to my life on that scale.  Meanwhile, I'll just get pudgy while enjoying the after pictures of back when I finished P90X.

Day 49 of 90 - Stretch or Rest  [8/30/2010 10:07 AM]
Well, since my rest day was already used up, today was Kenpo instead.  It was largely uneventful (as Kenpo tends to be) so I don't have much to say about it.  Tony obviously thinks this workout is a bit lame too since his idea of a 'break' is running in place, doing about 15 or so jumping jacks, and then 10 x jumps.  Says a lot when you need those kinds of breaks to make a workout tough.

 

I will take this opportunity, however, to mention that the extra protein I'm drinking really seems to have made a significant difference in my energy levels.  Lately, for about the last two weeks I'd say, I've had a significantly higher level of energy and it's been absolutely awesome.  I've been getting a little bit better sleep too, but it seems I had been getting good sleep here and there without the expected energy dividends here for the last couple of months.  So, good news on that front.  If you're interested, I'm drinking the Jay Robb Vanilla Whey.  Here's the delicious recipe Heather invented:

 

  • 1 1/4 Cup of Kefir or Whole Raw Milk
  • 2 scoops of Jay Robb Vanilla Whey
  • 4 Tbl of Organic Peanut Butter
  • 6 Ice cubes
  • 3/4 Cup of Water

 

Blend until creamy and enjoy the energy you've just infused.

Day 48 of 90 - Kenpo  [8/30/2010 9:58 AM]
Kenpo nothing.  Instead, I did some sweet Legs and Back, and had quite a different experience.  I took a one hour nap today (which was delightful), and after waking up, I started doing the legs and back routine.  For some reason, I was able to far exceed my previous performance on this workout.  It was pretty surprising.  My lunges were super low, my squats were super quick, and I was just generally feeling shockingly powerful.  All in all, I wasn't quite sure what was going on.  The only problem is the after-effects.

 

I'm not sure if it was because of the nap or what, but whatever gave me the ability to perform with such intensity also made me more sore than I have been since the beginning of this whole endeavor.  I remember on those first few days being absolutely shocked at the devastation that this program wreaked on my poor body.  I am now re-experiencing that annoying inability to sit down with any semblance of control.  I can't imagine how effective it would be if I could work out with that level of intensity every time but I don't know how to make that possible.

 

I was also able to continue my pullups.  I did six of each set (eight all together) but on one set, I did seven!!!  I know, shocking, but somehow I was able to eek it out.  I was pretty delighted with how realistic it is for me to pull my body into the air consistently and that is a really good feeling.  Pullups have always been tough, but with the toe tap at the bottom, I'm feeling pretty good about my progress.  Soon I'll have to have a kid hanging on my legs to make it a challenge at all.

Day 47 of 90 - Legs & Back  [8/30/2010 8:55 AM]
Hehehe, I cached in my 'Rest 401k' that I wasn't supposed to get until Sunday.  I had too much going on today and was pretty wasted, so I figure I'll do legs and back tomorrow and then Kenpo on Sunday (even though it's supposed to be the day of rest!).  Since Kenpo is fairly lame, I can get some rest while I'm doing it anyway.

Day 46 of 90 - Yoga  [8/27/2010 10:41 AM]
And Yoga I did.  I worked from home today so doing Yoga for one and a half hours was not as difficult as I usually feel like it is.  I really really tried to do everything they do, but I'm just not a yoga guy, no question.  I can do every pose they do, which is saying something, but I can only do the hard ones with good form for about two seconds.  Then my form just falls to pieces and I'm sure that no one would know I was actually trying to do yoga if they saw me.  They'd likely just think I was having a seizure of some sort.  I can imagine someone busting down the front door, putting their wallet in my mouth, and calling 911 because they are sure I've locked up in some unnatural way, only to see the TV and then notice the people on it look somewhat similar to me, and then start laughing hysterically as they realize that I'm actually trying to imitate them.

 

Though I know it's a good workout and I feel good after having done it, that's what yoga makes me feel like in a nutshell.

Day 45 of 90 - Back & Arms  [8/27/2010 10:30 AM]

3/4 of 2/3 DONE!!!!

 

Also known as half way done.  Pretty dang exciting, but a little discouraging too.  I mean, it feels like I've been doing this forever and I'm only halfway done?  But on the other hand, I've seen so much progress and I'm only half way done?  So, as usual, it just depends on how you decide to look at things as to whether or not they are going to bring you down or not.

 

I'm really into doing biceps.  For some reason it just makes me feel so powerful, like a superhero or a 18v lithium drill.  So, needless to say, I enjoyed today's routine, but hate trying to do pullups when my biceps are blasted.  It's very demotivating.  But, I'm sure my back will be sore since I can't rely on my arms as much to help get me up there.

 

Ab ripper was as expected and I don't imagine there will be much surprise on this one moving forward.  I might actually add some reps on the last weeks, but we'll see.  It's still causing me pain in both the short and long term, so no need messing with things now.

Day 44 of 90 - Plyosadism  [8/27/2010 10:18 AM]
Plyometrics, what have I ever done to you?  This was a hard hard day for plyo.  I was not feeling it and I was jumping as lazily as a person can actually leave the ground.  I was getting good height and I was sweating like mad, but my brain and the rest of me was basically asleep.  It was tough.  I had a rough time staying motivated, but I figured that's a good time to push it, so I even did the bonus round at the end.  Yay for me.

 

It's hard to see progress on plyo, though I was able to keep up with the double time jumping even when it lasted for the whole 15 or 30 seconds, and that's just tough.  I'd be very interested to play some volleyball to see if I've improved my jump height at all.  I gotta believe I'm jumping a couple of inches higher, but since I haven't played volleyball in a couple years, I don't see it happening any time soon.

 

Tomorrow is half way.  Hard to believe.  I'm going to celebrate by doing another 45 days.

Day 43 of 90 - Chest & Shoulders  [8/23/2010 7:44 PM]
I really pushed it last time, and this time, I tried to go even further.  I've almost gotten to the point where pain is more of an annoyance than a strong signal to stop doing something.  I'm not entirely sure that's a good thing, but in this context, it's given me the ability to approach muscle fatigue a little more effectively, and today I put that to the test.  I really kicked it into gear and improved on all of the sets of today's routine except a couple.  I was even able to do the clapping pushups on my feet instead of on my knees.  I'm almost a real man.

 

Today was the first day with a real protein drink.  Heather is amazing.  She can make the healthiest stuff taste incredibly good.  I'm not sure how someone can be so good at something that is supposed to be a science (cooking), but if we could compare cooking to an art, like dancing, surely she would be Ginger Rogers.  The protein shake she makes is supposedly some of the best Whey protein, and she makes it taste like a tantalizing treat.  Amazing.  We'll see if it makes a difference in the ol' energy levels.

 

Ab ripper was ab ripper.  The only difference today was that I kept in pace with their counting instead of going a bit faster.  I think it was a little bit of a better workout and by the time we got to the mason twists, my abs were pretty useless.  This is the best workout to go look in the mirror after.  When Heather saw me, she just said, "Dang!"  That will get me through another couple of weeks.

Try this the next time you do push ups. It's called Push Ups hand raised: when on the floor, raise your hands off the floor for a second and then push up. It doesn't sound hard, but it's a beast.

Day 42 of 90 - Stretch or Rest  [8/23/2010 7:31 PM]
I was feeling a bit down on plyometrics and Kenpo and having a tough time feeling motivated to continue them.  I had noticed, however, that I've been able to catch things as they fall a little more reliably.  Historically, I'd say I tended to miss things by just a little bit pretty consistently.  It was always close, but usually a miss.  Lately though, in the last few weeks, I'd noticed that I've been quick enough to catch stuff more often (not like bullets in my teeth, but a dropped toothbrush for sure).  I figure it must have something to do with the quick movements of Plyometrics and Kenpo.

 

Today, we were playing Uno Attack as a family (I highly recommend it).  Kaitlyn, being a bit too young to participate as a player "helps" either Heather or me.  We were all sitting on the floor around the coffee table.  This time she was helping me, but instead of the normal card putting down and button pushing, she decided it would be more fun to stand on my shoulders and sit on the top of my head, of course.  It was all fun and games until she overshot on one attempt to sit on my head and went tumbling forward toward the table.  Instantly, my arm shot out and caught her mere inches from the table.

 

And that, my friends, is how P90X saved my daughter's life.

Day 41 of 90 - Kenpo  [8/21/2010 2:55 PM]
I don't know why I just don't change the headings.  I'm supposed to be doing Kenpo today, but I did Yoga instead.  The downside is that I'm doing Yoga after legs, which means ever so agonizing glutes.  And then Kenpo ends up being right after arms which means hurty biceps.  Ah well.  From a scheduling perspective it's a win.

 

Today was the first Yoga day I could do each pose (at least momentarily).  At one point after the hardest stuff, Tony says, "Now take a moment to appreciate what you just accomplished" and I did.  It was a pretty cool feeling.  I've never been flexible (well, at least since I turned 25) so it's nice to regain some of that range of motion.  I'm still far from a Yoga champ, but it's another encouraging indication of progress.

 

I've been pretty tired after starting p90x after about the second week.  Today Heather and I were thinking about it and we came to the conclusion that it might be because of a lack of protein since I've been working out almost every day and not eating a bunch of protein.  She just got some protein powder to boost her levels in late pregnancy, so I'm going to start taking it too, which I never in a million years thought I would be doing.  It'll be interesting to see if it has any affect.

Day 40 of 90 - Legs & Back  [8/21/2010 2:48 PM]
Ah, I was definitely feeling the pullups again.  Something about this combination (maybe not doing anything else with arms) helps me rock out some decent pullup sets.  I did about eight sets of six, though I'm still toe tapping at the bottom, so they aren't from a dead hang. 

 

As far as legs are concerned, it's not a workout I really enjoy, but my knees aren't super strong, so it's nice to get a little more capability there.  I'd love to play some volleyball or ultimate and see if I'm able to get up a little more.  Maybe we can get a game going this Friday before Heather pops.

 

I skipped abs today, so I'm going to have to do them tomorrow along with Yoga (bleh).  I'm so tempted to skip Yoga, but it's a significant sweat inducer, so there's got to be some good value in it.  I don't think I'm in any danger of getting so bulky I lose flexibility.  I hit the 40's today.  So close to half way.

Day 39 of 90 - Yoga  [8/19/2010 8:42 PM]
Uh, Kenpo I mean.  And I kicked the crap out of Kenpo... using Kenpo.  I was so tired when I got home.  I mean, walking zombie tired.  I couldn't imagine doing Kenpo, but Heather is awesome and she made it way too easy to do it, so I couldn't even start up the excuse mill (she's awesome).  So, there I was, looking Tony square in the eye and daring him to make me bring it.

 

And bring it I did.  After getting going for the first 10 minutes or so, the energy kicked in.  I don't know if my body is getting used to the effort it takes or what, but I felt great while I was doing it.  I think I could have been believably superimposed into a Bruce Lee (not Steve Back) movie, and not as one of the guys in a white gi that's just there to get hurt.

 

So, I have a little motivation back, and that's nice.  Tomorrow is a real workout, and I need the motivation to do legs and back since I'm not crazy about that routine either.  Come to think of it, once Wednesday is done, I don't have much to look forward to until Monday.  Ah well.  It's all good.  I'm not even half done and the results are awesome so I'll hold on to that until this whole crazy thing is behind me.

Day 38 of 90 - Arms & Back  [8/19/2010 9:15 AM]
Man, those people know how to kill some biceps.  I've never had much luck in getting my biceps sore, but for some reason, doing 300 or so different exercises including pullups seems to get the job done.  It's so fun to go see the body part that was worked after the workout while it is so unreasonably enlarged.  I measured my biceps later on after the workout (since we were talking about such things at work earlier today) and I was at 15", which I think is decent for my long frame.  That's up from about 2" at birth, so that's pretty impressive.

 

I did ab ripper from memory this time.  I didn't feel like getting everything turned on to do it, so I just tried to do my best to remember the sequence.  I feel very confident that I remembered each set, but I'm not so sure about the order.  It's really cool being to the point that I can do 15 or so classic situps without feeling any discomfort in my midsection at this point.

 

I tried the green Gatorade recovery drink (as opposed to the red I've been drinking) and it was catastrophically horrible.  I could barely choke it down, so if you're looking to try it, I highly recommend the mixed fruit flavor.  I might just start eating one of these after each workout instead.

Day 37 of 90 - Plyometrics  [8/19/2010 8:49 AM]
I did plyometrics today as lazily as someone can do something that requires your feet to leave the ground 15 times every 30 seconds.  It was as if the top half of my body was still asleep.  Regardless, my heart and pores were as responsive as usual, and I hated it as much as usual.  I have to admit, I skipped the bonus set at the end, so if I get to the finale of this whole thing and look and feel exactly as I did when I started, I think that'll be why.

 

I'm starting to loose steam on the repetitive routines.  I have no heart for plyometrics, kenpo, and yoga.  Maybe I'm just sleepy, but it's getting harder to drag myself out of bed in the wee hours of the morning to do the tues/thur/sat stuff.  I'm still eight days out from the half way point.  I think next week I need to psych myself back up to really get in there and do this thing.  That, or I need a nap.

Day 36 of 90 - Chest & Shoulders  [8/16/2010 7:45 PM]
I didn't think I would ever like this routine as much as I did the first three sets of Mondays.  Turns out, I enjoy it much more as of today.  It really feels like it's pushing me to new heights of discomfort.  How wonderful it that?  I really tried to bring it today and was able to improve on almost all of my numbers by 10 to 25 percent.  When I was done, my chest was pumped and Heather and I laughed at what looked like a head transplant on someone else's body.

 

I went to a pool party on Sunday, and it was awesome to see how much farther I could throw the kids in the pool.  That right there makes all the sadness of rolling out of bed so early to sweat worth it.  I think I'd be happy to be done now if this was the end of the program and I'm still anxiously anticipating experiencing the feeling of ability at the end of the whole fiasco.

 

So tonight was my first attempt at doing all 349 ab reps in the ab ripper.  I didn't do 349.  Because I was too busy doing 359!  It was crazy how much easier than I thought it would be to do the whole dang routine.  I think I'd been skipping to each exercise faster than they go from one to the other because I was doing less of each one and then fast forwarding.  When I was keeping up with them and I got the little rest between each set, not only was I able to do all 25 of each set, but I did 60 mason twists at the end instead of the 50 they did.  Now, I know I can improve my form, but I'm still pretty thrilled to have made it to this point.  Can't wait to get to the point of having a real-life, undeniable six pack instead of a hint of one.

Day 35 of 90 - Stretch or Rest  [8/16/2010 7:33 PM]
And rest I did for the most part.  I did go to a pool party, but other than that, took it very easy and continued the regimen mentioned yesterday.  This evening I feel much, much better.  I'm encouraged and excited about doing chest and shoulders again tomorrow.

 

It was funny.  On the day I mentioned that I didn't see much difference in my 30 day pics, Heather pointed out how blind I was and showed me all the progress she saw.  And then, at dinner, I had yet to put a shirt on and was coming to the table.  Drew said, "Daddy, I can see your muscles!  I've never seen them before."  Both Heather and I cracked up, but it was pretty stinkin' awesome.  He then followed that up with, "Some guys have muscles so big you can see them through their shirts." 

 

Just you wait Drew Johnson, just you wait.

Day 34 of 90 - Kenpo  [8/16/2010 7:30 PM]
I was Supposed to do Yoga today.  Skipped it.  My excuse mill tells me it was because my throat was hurting and I was concerned that if I exerted myself, I would make it worse and take longer to recover and impact more of my days in the long run.  So instead, I got some extra rest, took some colloidal silver, gargled with salt water, drank some immune boosting tea, took some extra vitamin D, and drank some grapefruit seed extract.  We'll see if it gets better or worse.  Hurts like a son of a gun.

Day 33 of 90 - Legs & Back  [8/13/2010 7:46 PM]
Well now I feel silly for disparaging this workout, because today I really enjoyed it.  I was really into pushing it with my legs and I'm always surprised at how well I can bend over to pick things up after having done this workout.  The increase in flexibility is pretty impressive.  My thighs are done though, and my glutes are none too happy either. 

 

I don't know if it's because I'm lighter (having just gotten a hair cut) or what, but my pullups were much more encouraging today, too.  I found that if I give it a little toe tap at the bottom of the pullup to get past the dead hang arm lock, I can actually do better than I've ever been able to, and it was definitely encouraging.  It's just starting from a dead hang that's a killer for me.  Other than that, I was able to do about 40 (5 at a time) decent pullups and that felt pretty good.  Now of course, the guys on TV are doing something like 20 a set, but I can still hold on to my little victories.

 

I busted out 24 of 25 ab reps for each set (though I still had to take a break or two during the scissors).  That's only one shy of what they are doing for ab ripper AND I was able (to my shock) to do all 50 of the mason twists.  I had to look down to make sure I was doing them right because I couldn't believe it.  That means, next Monday I'll actually be doing the whole series of sets of ab ripper X, a milestone I'll be quite thrilled to experience.

 

Unfortunately, I compared my day 1 pics to my day 30 pics and could see no discernible difference.  Now, there's no doubt in my mind what so ever that I'm stronger and more capable, and that's awesome.  I think the lack of visible difference in the pics is because I've got some bad lighting with most of the light coming straight at me from the front, hence I can see little shadow and definition in my contours.  Heather swears there is a significant difference, so I'm holding on to that.  I'm getting more and more excited about seeing the results at the end of this whole thing.

Day 32 of 90 - Yoga X  [8/12/2010 5:14 PM]
YOGA NOTHIN'.  I had an epiphany.  Why spend an hour and a half doing yoga on Thursdays, when I have to go to work when I could do kenpo for a little less then an hour on Thursdays and save Yoga for Saturday.  Brilliant!  So, I immediately put the idea into practice and did Kenpo this morning.

 

I kinda felt like I was just going through the motions this morning.  I definitely got my heart rate up and produced a decent sweat, but I woke up just feeling so dang tired, it was hard to really bring it, as they say.  Nonetheless, I fulfilled my duty and kicked and punched my way to a slimmer, trimmer me but was quite delighted to be done.  I feel like I'm getting decent sleep, but still wake up a little tired.  I wonder if my body being in constant recovery is taking a toll.  I'm sticking with the recovery drink on weight days (Mon, Wed, and Fri), so we'll see if that helps out a bit.

 

Plyo really killed my glutes last time I did them (Tues) and I'm still pretty sore from then.  And now, with my sore back and arms, I'm back to being pretty excited about feeling progress.  More pullups tomorrow =[ and mix that with legs (on top of sore glutes) and that makes for an unexcited Christopher.  However, I'm taking tomorrow (Fri) off work so I may just do the whole routine throughout the day, five minutes at a time.  =]

Day 31 of 90 - Back and Arms  [8/11/2010 7:55 PM]
Heck yea, arms.  My goodness gracious, my biceps are crushed, but it was a beautiful thing.  I've never really thought my biceps would look like much because my arms are so dang long, but doing three weeks of this might just put some bulk on those spindly little limbs of mine.  Again, no duplication in any of the sets is such a beautiful thing.  I love just going straight down the list of different ways of causing discomfort, each and every one a study in insane difficulty.

 

All the kids started along side me, so as we're stretching our necks, all four of us just stood there in front of the TV with our heads cocked to the left, like confused little puppies pondering a strange noise.  Kaitlyn (3) was the first to drop out, followed by Ashlyn (6) who went to go play with her, but Drew (8) stuck with it and did the whole thing, including abs.  His form was horrible, but his tenacity was flawless.  Pullups are my freakin' kryptonite and as strong as I feel in other areas, I still feel like the punk kid who's gonna get sand kicked in his face at the beach whenever I try to do them.  I think I'm biologically cursed by my long limbs to be inefficient with them (and it doesn't help that my knees almost touch the floor when hanging from the bar above the door frame).

 

I did 23 of each ab set for ab ripper, and felt pretty good about it (except the fifer scissors.  Hate them).  One more time this week, and then at the beginning of next week I'm committing to actually doing all 25 of each one.  That'll be an awesome milestone, and I'm pretty psyched to hit it.  Ab ripper is some sweetness, and even though I'm so close, I still can't believe I could ever do the whole routine.  I guess we'll see on Monday.

Pull ups are beast. I still can only do 10 straight for the first set and then cut it down to 5 and 5. Even in crossfit where they teach us to do kipping pull ups, I can only pop out 10 in a row for 5 sets. I have seen girls pop out 20 kipping pull ups non stop. Crazy! But def keep it up!

Day 30 of 90 - Plyomentrics  [8/10/2010 11:22 AM]
1/3 Done!!!

 

That's huge, and I'm not talking about the font size (snicker, snicker).  It's an awesome feeling to have come this far, and it's an impressive program that still feels fresh after having done it every day for 30 days.  I'm feeling and seeing undeniable progress and on both fronts I'm completely thrilled.  I'm even more motivated to completely commit to the routine each day, which will only improve things. 

 

There's something helpful about knowing that I only have 90 days in which to maximize the potential results.  The false sense of urgency that helps create is awesome and now that I'm 1/3 done, I'm feeling more ready than ever to really get the most out of each day.

 

That started today with Plyometrics.  I'd say this is the first time I've really kept up with them on a hard work out.  There's lots (LOTS) of jumping involved and I was able to get up pretty well throughout the whole thing.  My heart was going crazy and the sweat was flying and I was really into it.  I'm also fairly sore from yesterday's chest/arms/shoulders.  I didn't expect that, but it's a wonderful feeling when I've been at it this long.  When it's all said and done, I might just give Tony a hug.

I loved the plyo days. The first time I did it, I my calves were sore the rest of the week. Keep it up. BTW, I can see the progess. (from behind) HAHAHAHAH j/k

Day 29 of 90 - Chest, Arms & Shoulders  [8/9/2010 9:23 PM]
Started with ab ripper this morning and, per schedule, did 22 of everything.  I felt pretty good about it.  I can't believe I'm so close to being able to do 25 of each dad'burn thing.  That's going to be a cause for celebration.  I'm starting to see a bit more definition in my abs which is quite delightful and I'm sure the slight change in eating habits is helping.  Still a bit to go before I'm thrilled with how my stomach looks, but I can no longer deny progress.

 

Chest, arms and shoulders tonight, which was the first time seeing this routine.  Tony is in rare form, too, crackin' jokes left and right.  Come to think of it, he might even be a little high (likely on protein joints) because he can't seem to pronounce anything either.  I have to believe he is the youngest or only child in his family, though I don't care enough to try to find out.

 

The work out itself was awesome.  It had some ridiculous things going on, but afterwords, I was once again excited to see my future in the mirror and be pleased (as I was slightly pumped).  I also love the fact that there is no repetition.  Each set is a different exercise and I'm really into that.  I was able to keep up with the girl in the group, though she was about 45 I'd say (which is dang impressive).  It's embarrassing doing pushups on your knees, but when I'm constrained to only using one arm, I gots no choice.

 

I'm also trying out Gatorade's recovery drink (now with protein!).  That stuff is sickeningly sweet, but at least the aftertaste is horrible.

Day 28 of 90 - Rest or Stretch X  [8/9/2010 12:08 PM]
Ok, so yoga wasn't so bad this time.  I'm not just standing there in disbelief as I see the contortions going on, and I'm not too far from being able to do all the poses reasonably.  The trick is just convincing yourself that pain isn't always a bad thing to be avoided.  I almost believe it.

 

One of the things that made it more fun was that two of my kids were laying under my legs while I was in any pose requiring a lunge (roughly the first 45 minutes), and then when I went to downward dog, I would lay on them and they thought it was hilarious.  Ashlyn tried to do a couple of the poses with me, but she brought it to my attention that they were uncomfortable.  She's quite insightful.

 

So, tomorrow begins the first day of the second set of three week pushes.  I'm thrilled to be starting some new stuff, especially while I'm being more careful with what I eat.  I took a quick preview of the tracking sheet and saw some crazy stuff, like clapping pushups, one armed pushups, so on and so forth.  I'm not sure why they think I'll be able to do more than .5 of any of that, but we'll see.

Day 27 of 90 - Yoga X  [8/8/2010 7:56 PM]
As mentioned previously, I did core synergistics again today.  The first time, I figured it was just something I ate, but since it's happened twice now, I have a strong suspicion that core synergistics gives me indigestion.  I assume it has something to do with balancing on my stomach and rolling around (which is just inane), or possibly running while in chataranga pose (funny how many things I know the name of that I never thought I would).  Either way, it is not pleasant.

 

I was totally going to skip today after spending five hours at my sister's house, killing, scalding, de-feathering, dismembering, disemboweling, and packing 21 rather large chickens.  Everything went quite swimmingly except some unexpected modifications required for the plucker to work as it was supposed to.  We thought we were going to have to pluck by hand, which if true would mean I would still be processing chickens almost regardless of when you are reading this.  Despite the amazing physical effort of all that, I still stuck to doing today's routine which certainly deserves an award of some sort IMHO.

 

Core synergistics is a beast of a routine, but I definitely like the fact that it's something new each set of the whole thing.  Can't beat that.  Also, I feel like it's doable and the tightness in my back would indicate it's going to make a difference.  Tony says I'm becoming more durable as a result of the core work, which is good since I've got a fourth kid on the way.  Tomorrow is Yoga again which is just 1.4 hours of annoyance and .1 hours of enjoyable stretching.  Ah, how fun.

Day 26 of 90 - Core Synergistics  [8/8/2010 7:41 PM]
Well, after having worked so hard yesterday on getting ready for Chicken processing day, I couldn't imagine trying to get up and work out, nor was I going to have time after work since we were going to my sister's house to set up chop... I mean, shop.  Also, the first time of doing core synergistics made me sore in some new and interesting ways, so I'm not so sure I could do another one two days later. 

 

So, I decided to cash in Sunday's rest day today and move core synergistics and yoga back a day to Saturday and Sunday respectively.  This week has been more dynamic than I expected, but if all goes according to plan, I will only have missed a Yoga for the week, a loss I feel I can handle given the trip and the ridiculousness of preparing to butcher 21 big fat chickens.  But, since I did skip Yoga, I feel obligated to refer to it as P89X from now on.

haha, jk, i screwed up this week too and did yoga, core syn, kenpo, yoga, core syn... then i needed a break so i took it saturday and did stretch-x sunday.

Day 25 of 90 - X Stretch  [8/5/2010 11:08 AM]
As mentioned previously, I'm forgoing the stretch to kick it with some Kenpo today.  I did it this morning and I have to say it's actually nice to be back to doing it in the morning.  I didn't think I'd feel that way, though now that I've passed the 21 day mark, this is technically supposed to be a habit.  I have a habit of doing p90x.  I wonder if it'll be hard to break.  I bet not.

 

Felt good doing Kenpo today.  I was sweating like a madman... who sweats a lot.  The air in front of me had no chance as I beat it into submission.  It's nice having at least one routine where I honestly feel like I'm totally keeping up with Tony's Cronies.  Best of all, the kids were watching and didn't laugh even once.  I've become intimidating.

 

I've also decided to take the diet part more seriously (to Gerry's delight).  I don't have any concrete plans, but it seems a shame to eat a big ol' Qdoba burrito and potentially undo the efforts of the morning.  I still can't bring myself to implement some rigid structure, but I do plan to do the following:

 

  • Decide how much I'm going to eat before I sit down
  • Avoid soft drinks (maybe once a week I'll allow it)
  • Dessert only once a week
  • Snack on fruit or some such healthiness twice a day between breakfast and lunch/lunch and dinner

 

I'm not going to worry about carbs or dairy or sugar other than to have some common sense.  I think if I can do those things over the next three week cycle, I'll have my tumtum where I want it, and that will be quite satisfying.  No use having a six-pack if it's hidden by a keg.

Dood that is a good plan. An easy diet to stick to is Paleo, just think of yourself as a hunter/gatherer. Just eat meats, vegetables, fruit, and nuts. But if you are going to do carbs, just try and stay away from white carbs like white rice, white breads, and white potatoes.

Day 24 of 90 - Kenpo X  [8/5/2010 10:57 AM]
Langdon comes in to work today and tells me about the new routine called Core Synergistics.  To be honest, he scared me a bit with all his talk of running pushups and bananas and such, but he said it wasn't as bad as plyometrics.  I'm not sure what I did to him to make him think I deserve it, but his deception was unwarranted I'm sure.

 

Core Synergistics is... difficult.  It's supposed to work the strongest muscles in your body, so logically, it has to be pretty intense.  I had no idea my lower back could be sore in the way that it was, all tight and unforgiving.  I started at night since I'm still building stuff to prep for chicken day, and it was tough.  I'll admit it was nice to see something new and not know what was coming up next, and they don't do the same thing twice throughout the whole routine which was cool, but at the end Heather just said something like, "Geez."  I agree.

 

So, I made up for skipping yesterday, but I'm still one day down.  I'm going to do Kenpo X tomorrow and then skip the stretch, meaning I'll be doing core synergistics again the day after, but I'll be back on schedule.  It's gonna be tough going to bed right after doing this and then getting up and doing Kenpo.  Fortunately, Kenpo ain't so bad.

Day 23 of 90 - Core Synergistics  [8/5/2010 10:51 AM]
Core who?

 

So, I woke up at 5:00 AM, showered, packed, went to the airport, got on a plane, sat there for five hours reading a decent book, arrived in Maryland somewhere, chilled for about an hour with some auntie Anne's pretzels (SO GOOD), got on another plane, sat there for an hour (finished my book, so-so ending), arrived in Virginia Beach, got my car, drove home for 35 minutes, gave the kids presents, enjoyed the family for about an hour, and then put the kids to bed.  Technically, at this point, I could have done core synergistics.  Instead, I talked with Heather for about an hour and then went to bed.

 

Good call, I say.

Day 22 of 90 - Yoga X  [8/5/2010 10:43 AM]
Ah, what a bummer.  There I was, all ready to do Yoga.  I hadn't grabbed the file from my computer at home (I'm still in San Diego at this point you see), so I figured I could just stream it from my machine at home.  What I didn't count on was how abysmal the hotel internet connection would be.  It was horrible, even at 8:00 in the morning. 

 

So we (Camdawg and I) get through about the first 10 minutes of our streaming Yoga routine, and then it freezes.  Now neither of us had realized that it wasn't streaming anymore, so we sat there in the pose for about 45 minutes before we realized anything was wrong.  Very embarrassing.  Needless to say, we did not do Yoga, so this is an official skip day.  Ah, well.  It's not how many times you fall, but whether or not you get back up, yea?
